Marine Atlantic Ferries

Marine Atlantic Ferries

One of Davie’s most innovative projects was the construction of two Ro/Ro Car Passenger Ferries for Marine Atlantic Inc. The M.V. Caribou anf the M.V. Joseph and Clara Smallwood. These vessels were designed for year round service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port-Aux-Basque, Newfoundland and North Sydney to Argentia, Newfoundland.
The ice-class 1A Super ferries were equipped with two bow and two stern doors and ramps for fast turnaround loading and unloading.
At the time of build, the construction methodology represented a first for North American shipbuilding. The principal changes that were implemented were that all work was planned in more detail and implemented in careful sequence. Before the construction commenced, the ship was devided into 194 units. These units were fabricated, assembled and pre-outfitted to the maximum extent.. Units left our shops with all the major systems, including insulation, piping and electrical equipment installed. These units were then joined with great skill and precision.
This approach brought our engineering the ultimate challenge of developing a complete information system which resulted in improved productivity and superior quality
